Sony has been sending out emails lately encouraging (or letting them know) users signed up on their website to “Get PSP system update 2.60 today!” The system update in question, version 2.60, was released on November 28th, over two weeks ago. For those who do not know, firmware 2.60 will NOT allow you to run homebrew (homemade software) on your PSP, and you cannot downgrade to 1.50 to fully enjoy this. There is currently a program (by Fanjita) which will allow you to run a majority of homebrew on your PSP firmware v2.00. The question is, why would Sony send out an email to get the 2.60 update two weeks since it’s release? There are a couple theories: they are sending this email in preparation of Christmas, so when Santa drops off a PSP under their tree they will want to update. Maybe it is because of the recent release of Hello World on a PSP firmware 2.01 (through a GTA savegame) has them worried. Either way, Sony has their reasons and are protecting their investment, just like those of us who do not upgrade are protecting ours.
