북캐롤리나 대학에 다니는 한 학생이 2대의 PS3를 훔친 후 집에서 경찰이 쏜 총에 의해 사망하였습니다.

A North Carolina college student has been shot at home after being accused of stealing two PS3s.

미국에 PS3가 발매된 후 크고작은 사건들이 발생한 가운데, 지난주 금요일 미국의 북캐롤리나에서는 사망자가 발생하였습니다.

사망자는 18살의 Peyton Strickland로 현재 북캐롤리나 대학에 다니는 학생으로 PS3를 2대 훔쳤다는 혐의를 받고 경찰은 그를 체포하기 위해 기숙사로 들어갔습니다.

그러나 그가 문을 열어주지 않았고, 실랑이를 벌인 끝에 문을 열어주는 순간 경찰은 총을 쏘고 Peyton Strickland는 그자리에서 사망했습니다.

그의 애견 역시 총에 맞아 죽었으며, 당시 그와 같이 있던 한 친구는 Peyton Strickland는 무기를 소지하지 않았고 단순히 PS3컨트롤러를 쥐고 있었다고 말했습니다.  

경찰은 PS3 무선 컨트롤러를 총으로 착각했던 것일까.... 

The PlayStation 3's launch on November 17 was marked by long waits, crowded lines, and a few injuries. Now the new system has claimed its first life. Last Friday, police in North Carolina shot and killed a teenager who was accused of stealing two PS3s.

The shooting occurred at the home of suspect Peyton Strickland, 18, which he shared with three roommates. Police had been sent to the home to arrest Strickland, but according to New Hanover County Sheriff Sid Causey, the teenager refused to open the door and officers had to break it down.

One of Strickland's roommates said the shooting victim was about to open the door when police broke it down, and that he was unarmed but holding a PlayStation 3 controller at the time. Strickland's dog, a German shepherd, was also shot and killed.

A University of North Carolina-Wilmington student alleges that Strickland, a Cape Fear Community College student, and another UNC-Wilmington attendee attacked him in his apartment after he arrived home from buying two PS3s on launch day. The officers sent to arrest Strickland were members of a special unit helping university officers serve warrants. Sheriff Causey did not specify why the special unit was helping with this particular arrest. Three deputies from the special unit have been placed on paid leave and the State Bureau of Investigation is examining the case.

The second man named in the arrest warrant was arrested at a different address and released on bail Saturday.
